The electrolysis of sodium chloride (common salt) for the on-site production of sodium hypochlorite is one of the oldest electrochemical processes in the chemical industry.
The electro-generation of sodium hypochlorite solutions began with two industrial applications where sea water as raw material was used (zero-cost raw material).
One of them was the treatment of the cooling circuits pf power plants located near to the sea, and other, the cooling circuits of big transoceanic ships (especially in tropical waters).
In both cases, the cooling circuits were medium-term collapsed by algae growth, mollusks and other marine organisms.

Later uses of salt electrolysis have been in industrial laundries and in waste water treatment (destruction of organic matter and toxicity), destruction of dyes in the textile industry, treatment of cooling towers, hospital centers, alimentary industries, aquariums, pools and ornamental fountains. The on-site electro-generated hypochlorite starting from sea water or brine solutions avoids the important problems derived from the manipulation of the commercial sodium hypochlorite (130 grs./liter, expressed as active chlorine).

The sodium hypochlorite is usually sold as a diluted solution, having a mean lifetime of 100 days. Transportation, storage and manipulation problems are avoided with salt electrolysis technology.

I.D. ELECTROQUIMICA has a wide experience in electrolysis processes of industrial waste waters (Fine Chemistry, Pharmacy and Textile), where effluents with high levels of pollutants (high COD, "Chemical Oxygen Demand"), high Toxicity (equitox/m3) and high levels of total nitrogen are meetly processed by salt electrolysis processes to obtain a processed effluent with organics levels reduced up to 90% of the initially present, where the total nitrogen is reduced up to 95%. Other features of electrolysis processes are the completely decoloration of effluent and the reduction of its toxicity.

SALT ELECTROLYSIS does not only generates a very efficient disinfectant agent, but a series of species working together with chlorine are also generated (sinergy) to produce the oxidation of the organic matter and the consequent mineralización to CO2, nitrogen, sulphate, etc. SALT ELECTROLYSIS does not only assure the destruction of pathogen but the mineralización of organic substances coming from human secretions, solar creams, etc., is also achieved.
